Visit the surroundings

Provincial capital since Gallo-Roman times, a university town, Poitiers has an exceptional architectural heritage which has been enriched over time. Strong in the heritage of the past, turned towards the future with dynamism, the city of Art and History combines the art of living, a taste for strolling and urban entertainment. It welcomes its visitors in a historic center housing more than 86 listed monuments, in the heart of a landscape dominated by Romanesque heritage.

To discover along the lively streets and squares:

- The Notre-Dame-la-Grande church (11th - 12th century): built from the 11th century, this jewel of Romanesque art is famous for its sculpted facade.

- Saint-Pierre Cathedral (12th - 13th century). Begun at the time of Aliénor d'Aquitaine and Henri II Plantagenêt in the Angevin Gothic style, its dimensions are imposing. Rich in exceptional furniture (Clicquot organs, stained glass windows, 13th century stalls), it has recently revealed magnificent paintings from the 13th century, a veritable treasure of radiant Gothic.

- The Saint-Jean Baptistery (5th to 12th century): considered to be one of the oldest examples of Christian Gaul, its foundations date from the 5th century. In addition to the baptismal font, you can admire a collection of sarcophagi and beautiful Romanesque paintings. - The Palais de Justice (12th - 14th century): former residence of the Counts of Poitou - Dukes of Aquitaine. Precious testimony to the civil architecture of the time, its large "Pas Perdus" room takes the visitor back to the time of Eleanor of Aquitaine.

- The Church of Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand: this remarkable Romanesque building, a place of pilgrimage on the road to Compostela listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is dedicated to the first attested bishop of Poitiers.

- The Church of Sainte-Radegonde (11th to 15th century): one of the oldest churches in Poitiers.
