Brigitte Bardot's house in Saint-Tropez - France Audio guide in English

Visit the surroundings

During ancient times, this small Mediterranean bay attracted a large number of Roman, Celtic and Greek conquerors. In the year 68, Torpes, steward of Nero who refused to renounce his Christian faith, was tortured and killed in Pisa by the emperor.

His remains, accompanied by a rooster and a dog whose only food was the corpse of the deceased, were thrown aboard a boat on the Arno. The Christians of present-day Saint-Tropez found the boat, hid the remains of the Holy Martyr and erected a chapel for it.

Torpes gave its name to Saint-Tropez, the rooster inspired the name of the neighboring village of Cogolin (which means "little rooster") and the dog, that of Grimaud (which means "old dog").

Never has a star been so intimately linked to a home port as Brigitte Bardot in Saint-Tropez. Two myths indissolubly confused in an era, when Roger Vadim creating the woman shone the spotlight on this small fishing village hardly frequented until then.

A LOVE STORY THAT GOES BACK TO CHILDHOOD

Let's start first by challenging the legend if possible. It was not by coming to shoot "Et Dieu créa la femme", which contributed to propel her overnight to the status of the little fiancee of the French that Brigitte Bardot discovered La Madrague, the praises of which she celebrated in her eponymous song. The reality, less embellished, is all the more touching. Her parents had a pied-à-terre here where she spent her holidays in the company of her sister Mijanou. Nothing therefore resembles a coincidence when in 1958 Brigitte Bardot set her sights on a house located not far from her childhood, facing the bay of Canoubiers, a kind of tropical paradise buried under canisses, mimosas and a huge purple bougainvillea.
