Saint James and the pilgrims Moissac
The twelve apostles are not all represented. We only see eight of them, one of whom is not part of the original group that surrounded Christ: Paul and Peter (on the southeast corner), James and John (on the northeast corner), André and Philippe (on the northwest corner), Barthélemy and Matthieu (on the southwest corner). Judas Iscariot was probably replaced early on by Paul, as is often the case in iconography. As for Simon, he is represented on a relief which is currently in the cloister, but not in its original location: the plaque which is placed on the east face of the central pillar of the west gallery is obviously a later addition, as demonstrated, for example, by the smaller dimensions than those of the pillar and the other plates. It was probably on the pillar that was part of the portico surrounding the fountain of the cloister, a set that has now disappeared. She would have been next to the plaque with Thadée, also missing, but whom we know through a drawing from the end of the 18th century. The dimensions of this plate, given by the author of the drawing, are as small as those of Simon. One can imagine that this pillar of the portico having no attached capitals had its four faces free, thus being able to shelter the four missing apostles.
